Essay

“For this assignment, please go to http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/crito.html. This is a conversation that Socrates has with his old, dear friend Crito. Socrates is in his prison cell awaiting the day of his execution, when he will drink the hemlock that will end his life. Crito and others have devised a plan to get Socrates out of prison and out of Athens, to preserve his life. Remember that, when Socrates was tried for denying the gods and corruption the minds of the young men of Athens, when he was convicted, he chose execution over being exiled from Athens. But Crito and others really want Socrates to continue his life, even if it means it has to be outside the Athenian city-state. Read the main arguments from both men, concentrating on their longer speeches. What are Crito’s feelings for his old friend? How does he dispute Socrates’s decision to accept death rather than exile? In what ways does Socrates remain by his original decision? How would you evaluate the friendship of these two? Do you think that either of these two was more “correct” than the other? (That’s not a right-or-wrong answer, I’m just interested in your own perspective.) You should plan to write 500 or more words. I’m not interested really in summarization, except as you refer to facts; I’m interested in getting your own perspective. Feel free to make it personal!”
