Purpose
We live in a constitutional republic. This means that on the one hand we recognize that the people are the source of political power, but on the other hand the people elect representatives to do the people’s business.
The purpose of this assignment is two-fold: first, help you discover who represents you at the state level; and second, help you learn one way in which you can communicate with these representatives.

Visit the Utah State Legislative District Maps page at http://le.utah.gov/GIS/findDistrict.jsp.
Follow the instructions on this page to find the names and email addresses of your two state legislators (one senator, one representative)
Explore the state legislature’s web site to get an idea of the legislature’s scope of responsibility
Think of a subject that is important to you that falls within the legislature’s scope of responsibility
Craft and send an email message about your important subject; put my email address (mbrosch2@bruinmail.slcc.edu) in the BC field.
Guidelines on crafting the email message
Use correct and appropriate English
Appropriate means “suited to the context.” This is a formal communication between you and your senator and representative. Accordingly, the language should be more formal than Facebook, Twitter, 4chan, etc.
Use a subject line
An empty subject line makes an email appear suspicious. Many people won’t open a message with an empty subject line.
A descriptive subject line is helpful for busy people:
Good: State funding for classroom size reduction in grades K through 6
Bad: Education
Keep it short
Legislators are busy people. Serving for the legislature is for many, if not most, a second job

What is important to you
Why it’s important to you
A suggestion about how to address the issue you raise
Example
Dear Senator Stephenson:
I am concerned about the increased speed limit on I-15. I feel that 80 miles per hour is too fast.
A friend of mine was involved in an accident on I-15 two months ago. His car was totaled and he spent three weeks in the hospital. The accident was caused because the other driver’s vehicle had worn tires that couldn’t handle the high speed.
If the speed limit must remain at 80 miles per hour, then I suggest more frequent safety inspections for tires, to ensure that cars can handle the higher speed limit.
