A small charitable foundation has funded an after school program and wishes to have an evaluation that is both formative and
summative. The foundation wants to know how to improve the program and whether or not it is having an impact on academic
performance as well as socio-emotional well-being of the students that participate. A total of 6 months (January 1 to June
30) is allowed for the evaluation. You have just finished your degree in one of WMU’s evaluation doctoral programs and you
will be directing this project. Besides yourself you will have 2 part-time research assistants to help, and you will have
advice from a College of Education faculty member who has content expertise in supplemental education programs, such as this
one. This program is in its second year of operation and is established in 4 elementary and 2 middle schools (all are within
the Kalamazoo Public Schools district). The program staff include overall project director, site managers, and then one
teacher with minimum BA and one assistant/parapro in each class. There are around 6 or 7 classes per site. The program runs
from September to June each year and covers 2 hours after the end of the school day. Typically, around 750 students
participate in the program each day.
