Everyday Use by Alice Walker

Analyze one of the stories listed above from a historicist critic’s perspective. Begin your writing process with a close reading and explication, looking for motifs, details and issues that seem to you to form the focus of the story’s meaning. Much as you did in your formalist interpretation of a poem, identify what you believe to be the argument or point that your selected story makes, and identify tropes in the story that support that argument. As you develop and revise your draft, connect your argument to the time period in which the story is set OR to the time period in which the story was composed: what historical event or issue does this story seem to have particular relevance to? What does the story help us understand about that historical issue or event? Evidence that validates your argument should come BOTH from the story (what tropes suggest that this is the point?) AND from your research into the relevant historical period (how does this story reflect, criticize, or otherwise have relevance to the world in which this story was composed or set?).
