Exemplification

Exemplification
Every text has an argument, even if the text is visual. Every painting, movie, and song make deliberate choices in order to reach the audience in specific ways.

For this essay, you will choose one movie, painting, or song and identify strategies or appeals that the work of art uses to make it effective. You will explain the argument of your chosen text and then identify and analyze the text’s use of appeals and rhetorical strategies. Your first body paragraph should summarize your chosen text and its argument (you should assume that your readers are not familiar with the text), and the remaining body paragraphs should outline the strategies that make your work of art effective.

Use clear examples to develop a well-organized essay. When writing the paper, choose enough specific, relevant, accurate, and representative strategies to support your thesis. Organize the material into a sequence that most effectively illustrates the thesis: the strategies and/or appeals that make your chosen work of art effective.

You will NOT be researching your topic in any way; instead, you will rely on your own observations and experiences for your examples and evidence. Your essay should be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced. Refer to pages 175-188 for a refresher on key concepts and to refer to an example exemplification essay.
