Assignment 4a – Outline

In this course, we will study many different styles in art and architecture from around the world. In order to achieve a meaningful understanding of these various styles, we must learn how to identify and explain their central ideas, concepts a/o historical circumstances, and how they are demonstrated in a given work(s) of art or architecture.

In this Module Assignment, our focus is the ancient Greek style.

In order to successfully complete this Assignment 4a : Outline, students must first read the content in this module on Ancient Greek Style : Lecture 4 and complete the quiz. Students who do not follow this recommendation will not meet the expectations for the outline.
Instructions:

1.

After reading the content in this module on Ancient Greek Style and completing the quiz, all students will create an outline that adheres to the format of the practice outline template below.

2.

Students will notice that the practice outline template below uses the same organization as the practice outline already used for ancient Egyptian art, that is, in order to keep practicing and improving skills in written organization and communication in this course. What is being practiced, again, refers to the Writing Guidelines.pdf which was studied in the beginning of the quarter, which will provide correct guidance on organizing the introduction, explanation, exemplification, and use of evidence for each distinct idea or historical circumstance of a given style.

NOTE:

As the instructor, I’d like to take this time to clarify with all students that, as per the learning objectives of this course, this assignment is designed to assess comprehension of the subject matter and important skills including: written organization, written communication, and contextualization.

This assignment is NOT designed to assess creative writing (original expressive writing in one’s own words, with one’s own unique voice, etc., I love my students’ individuality and personality, but I do not assess it in their writing in Art I. Instead —and this is harder to do in online classes —I spend time with my students and talk to them a lot during class time to appreciate their unique personalities and points of view!!!). That being said, students should please focus their energy on organization and clarity, referring to the text already provided in the course content. In doing so, it will facilitate student learning about the subject matter and demonstrating comprehension of the subject matter, so we accomplish all of our learning goals!!!!!

3.

For Assignment 4a, all students will organize and create a practice outline that identifies and explains 3 main ideas of the ancient Greek civilization, and how they are stylistically reflected in BOTH the Doryphorus and the Parthenon (Temple of Athena) as the two examples.

ALSO:

Students are required to focus specifically on these 3 main ideas of ancient Greek civilization:

(1) humanism, (2) idealism and (3) rationalism

To help, here attached is Study Guide 4 : ART_I_Study_Guide_4.pdfPreview the documentView in a new window

Students are expected to first clearly introduce and explain to their reading audience: what is humanism? what is idealism? and what is rationalism? Then students are expected to indicate how the examples of BOTH the Doryphorus AND the Parthenon visually express those ideas, and appropriate evidence is to be provided for the examples.

4.

Students are required to provide evidence (NOT lengthy evidence, but appropriate evidence) to indicate how the examples of BOTH the Doryphorus AND the Parthenon visually express those ideas. Students should bare in mind that ancient Greek humanism, idealism and rationalism overlap in certain ways, but must be distinguishable in the outline writing.

PLEASE use only the course content — Lecture Summary 4, Powerpoint 4 and Study Guide 4, and the course textbook —for all outline introductions, explanations, information, evidence, etc.

5.

Students must adhere to the format of the practice outline template included below for submission. Regarding the length of written content for ideas I, II, and III (humanism, idealism and rationalism): this will vary, but as this is a three (3) page outline, a good recommendation is to dedicate approximately 1 page per each idea. Three (3) pages total will suffice and usually the sections requiring the most length are the explanation and evidence sections.

6.

Students will type their outlines in MS Word doc. or MS Word docx. format AND format must be as follows:

12-point font Arial, Courier or similar — Double-Spaced — max 3 pages —- Full Name & Assignment Name @ the top

NOTE:

Now that I have a better understanding of Canvas and assessing written assignments in Canvas, I am going to require this as standard formatting for every written assignment. Students who do not follow all the instructions and/or do not follow the above-described format for MS Word will automatically receive a 25% deduction on the assignment!
