This assignment asks you to perform a close reading of a short sequence from one the films.
select and provide two sequences on D2L. You must choose only
one of the sequences for close analysis.
Once again, this assignment asks you to demonstrate your ability to compose a close reading.
Two fundamental elements are essential to a close reading: a clearly stated argument in the first
paragraph, and specific textual “evidence” drawn from the sequence that supports your claim. In
other words, these papers must demonstrate your ability to isolate issues of significance in the
films and to create an argument in which you will prove your point using the text as evidence.
Your argument should be pointed, phrased concisely, but still unique, original or controversial.
Your argument should venture something. Supporting paragraphs should clearly relate back to
your argument and should seek to convince the reader of the validity of your central idea. There
are innumerable ways to support an argument, but be sure to draw from the specific features of
the clip in your supporting passages. Make direct reference to images you see, dialogue you hear,
sounds that grab your attention, movement, shot composition, objects within the frame, the way
the camera encourages your to see the sequence unfold. If it is helpful, imagine references to the
sequence like quotations from a book you are analyzing. Dig into the details and draw out what
those elements that you mind meaningful; then interpret those meaningful details for the reader.
Above all do not give a summary of the film’s story. What is required is an analysis or
persuasive interpretation, not a mere summary.
Do not exceed two pages. This limitation should encourage you to be efficient with your
wording. Superficial observations, redundant statements, and empty sentences must be avoided.
Focus on stating your argument and then supporting it with close interpretations of the details of
the sequence.
The essay must be typed, spell-checked and proofread. Essays are graded on a 100-pt scale
