Film & Theater studies

First, read the book True West by Sam Shepard. Based on concepts and definitions presented in the first unit post comments about how your this play will engage audiences. Questions that should be addressed are below: (10 Points)

•We learned in the first unit of the course what Ingmar Bergman had to say about theatre, that the little world of of the theatre helps us understand the big world of life. To what extent does your assigned play help you understand the big world of life? In other words, does the play lead you to think about something in a new light? Does it lead you to consider a point of view you might not have considered otherwise? Does it lead you to feel empathy for one of the characters and, by extension, for others in your own life? Is there some other way in which the play brings meaning to your life?

•We learned in this unit what Leo Tolstoy said about art: “It is a means of communicating between people, uniting them in the same feelings.” What emotional response(s) will the play elicit from audience members? Do you think the emotional response(s) will unite them, as Tolstoy suggests? Can an audience be united in the way Tolstoy suggests? Explain your point of view.

•We learned in this unit that theatre responds in different ways to the culture from which it springs. Sometimes it reflects the values of those in power. Other times it undercuts those values in some way. How does your play respond to cultural values? Does it mock them, question them, protest against them, expose them, celebrate them, revel in them, take them for granted, or just what, exactly?

•Consider your answers to the previous questions and discuss whether and to what degree the play will appeal to people today? Will it appeal to all people or to some people? To what group or groups of people will it appeal and why?

•Consider the spaces we learned about in the first unit. Based on your answers to the previous questions, consider what kind of space you would choose for a production of your play. Explain your choice. Base your explanation on what you learned in the unit about spaces and their impact on shaping audience response.
