Freud Questions

Please answer TWO of the following three questions. Limit your answer to about 6-7 sentences each. Try to use quotes from “The Freud Reader” readings to back up your answer.

1. In the late 1890s, Freud famously rejection the “seduction” hypothesis and many see this as the real beginning of psychoanalysis. Explain why he rejected it, what he replaced it with and why it is considered so important?

2. In both The Advanced Guide and Revolution in Mind, Freud is accused of borrowing many of his basic ideas from other sources. Give three specific examples from either work. Does this make Freudian theory unoriginal? Why or why not?

3. Explain the cause of hysteria as described in Freud’s early work (e.g. The Aetiology of Hysteria, Various Drafts and letters). Use specific quotes from Freud himself? What might have been some of the problems with this approach, some of which Freud himself recognized as he shifted his view in the late 1890s.
