1. List students’ academic and behavioral successes
2. Write an operational definition of the challenging behavior in observable, measurable terms.
3. Identify events, time, and situations when the behavior takes place
4. Identify consequences that reinforce the behavior
5. Develop a hypothesis/summary
a. What is the most likely function or reason for the behavior?
b. What is gained by the behavior?
c. When is it mostly likely to occur?
d. When is it least likely to occur?
e. What consequences maintain behavior?
6. Collect data to confirm the hypothesis
7. Make a plan for positive behavior to meet the same need with appropriate replacement behavior.
