Please do two small discussions, each one is around 150 words. Two discussions are same topic, introduction is
below(making two maps and answer the questions, then upload with the file).
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has recently released revised floodplain maps for Connecticut and other
states. These are available online at the FEMA Map Service Center (please Google it).
Please follow these directions:
In the “Enter an address, a place, or longitude/latitude coordinates” blank at the FEMA Map Service Center website, type
in: University of Connecticut Avery Point
Experiment with the map viewer (as in our past week’s assignment, this may require your patience). Try zooming in and out
and “panning” through some of the maps (that is, sliding your mouse across the map while holding down the left-mouse
click)
a. Note that most of the Avery Point campus is located in the lower right-hand corner of one of the maps; use that map.
(You may need to consult the UConn website about the location of the Avery Point campus in order to identify the
UConn/Avery Point campus on the FEMA maps.)
b. Under the words “New London County” on the left of the left of the webpage, click the large icon (it’s a magnifying
glass) labeled “View.” Please wait what may be up to several tens of seconds. A new map will load in a new window.
c. Click the “Make a FIRMette” button. You will see that there is a green-color-highlighted box in the upper left of the
map. While HOLDING down your left mouse, slide the highlighted box onto the Avery Point campus portion of the map (this
can be a bit tricky due to the time lag of redrawing the map; if necessary, please start over by clicking “MAX Zoom Out”
and then zooming in again.) Please wait what may be up to several tens of seconds. Select “Create Firmette” as an image
file and send the resulting gif file as an attachment).
d. Click the “Back” button on your map. Please use the “Zoom In” in order to examine the map and its Legend. Respond to
the following four questions together in a single paragraph of text and submit. (i.) What two different types of flooding
codes do you see in the near vicinity of Avery Point? (ii.) What do those two codes mean? You will need to explore the
Legend of the map in order to decipher the codes; (iii.) What are the range of elevations associated with these two types
of flooding codes on the map? (iv.) Would you get your feet wet leaving Avery Point campus during a 100-year flood event,
according to the map (hint: again, examine the map Legend carefully, in alteration with viewing the map portion of Avery
Point; you may have to zoom in and zoom out repeatedly and patience may be required)?
