Graphic Novels

Week 6 | Write – Graphic Novels
Prompt McCloud is making an argument for the respectability and the aesthetic usefulness and relevance of graphic novels. This argument is made because other critics have argued that graphic novels – comics – should not be classified as literature. This type of debate has happened before. In the first half of last century, the relative merit of the motion picture as art was argued vigorously and often. The issue is, on occasion, still addressed. Two important points emerge from this discussion. First, aesthetic sensitivities matter. What affects us changes us. Second, new technologies are always greeted with suspicion.

This week you have a choice of topic.

You may choose to research and write about an argument in the realm of fine arts about the relative merits of a particular artist, a school or movement, an innovation, or a critical approach.
You may also research and write about an issue concerning the interplay of high and low culture. For example, are these terms no longer relevant?
