Paper Instructions

The purpose of this assignment is to compare and contrast your previous perceptions with the group
threat perspective as well as reality.

Choose ONE of the three main topics in the course: race, ethnicity, or immigration. In your paper, you
will need to discuss what your perceptions on race/ethnicity/immigration and crime were before this
class (1 page). You will also need to give a brief background of the group threat perspective (racial,
ethnic or immigrant threat) as well as the reality of the relationship between your topic and crime/the
criminal justice system (1-2 pages). Finally, point out the differences and similarities between your
previous perceptions, the group threat perspective, and reality (1-2 pages).

You are not being asked to do any outside research for this project. Simply use the information from the
class notes and the assigned readings. This means that your bibliography page does not need to contain
anything other than the class notes and assigned class readings and even those are not required
references.

The paper must be 3-4 pages in length and is worth 50 points toward your overall grade. (Your title page
and your bibliography do not count toward your 3-4 pages.) Be sure to follow the guidelines for both
professional writing skills and appropriate citations. Following the guidelines will count toward 20% of
your final paper grade.
