History 1302.74 Wilbur 2015 Examination I Instructions: Please print out this sheet so that you may have it as you work on your exam.

• You will complete all four (4) questions for your exam.

• Create a new document, number your questions and make sure your paper is one document ­ not four.

• Each essay questions is worth 25 points. All exams must be written using proper grammar, spelling and form. Please use paragraphs! As I like to say, “Let’s use our classy spelling and sexy punctuation!”

• At a minimum​, each answer should require one (1) page to a page and a half length (1 ½) answer.

• Double­space your test answers, use standard Times New Roman, 12 pt. font and standard margins.

• Submit your examination as a PDF file • Save your exam as LastName_FirstName_Exam_I_1302.74 (Example: Smith_John_Exam_I_1302.74)

• All exams must be uploaded to Blackboard by Sunday, November 15th by 11:59 pm. .

• You have almost five days to complete your exam so plan accordingly.

• No late exams will be accepted for any reason. Please allow at least a week for grades to be posted.

• Do not email me your exam. Upload it to Blackboard. The tab is labeled “Exam I Upload”

• All students are expected to complete their own work.

• If you quote from your text or Meet You in Hell you must add the page number ­ ex. (Standiford, 49) at the end of the sentence. The same follows for quoting from your textbook – ex. (Schaller, 23). If you reference the video lectures or documentaries please put a shortened version of the title in parenthesis. (Triangle) or (Roosevelt)

• Please allow at least a week for grades to be posted.

• Collaboration, cut and paste answers inserted into your paper from the internet, and other means of academic dishonesty will not be accepted and will result in a score of 0 for your exam and an F in the class. No exceptions. What am I looking for in your answers? I am looking for essays that synthesize the material – the text, articles, videos, readers. There is no one place in the text that will give you ‘the answer’ but you will need to make connections and relationships between ideas, persons, events, etc. Answers will receive the most credit that cite multiple sources from the videos, text, articles and reader. Do not take chunks directly out of the book. It just honestly gets really boring to grade if you do that. I enjoy reading students opinions and thoughts. It is very important that you follow the instruction for form, submission, quotations, and uploading, etc. A failure to do so will be detrimental to your grade. Do not go on the internet to get answers to the questions. All submission are checked for academic dishonesty.

Exam I

1. Sitting Bull stated, “The life my people want is a life of freedom.” Likewise Chief Joseph simply asked the government for equal rights enshrined by law. Describe what freedom meant to the Indians and how that conflicted with the interests and values of most white Americans. What was the United States’ strategy for dealing with the Native Americans? What role did the railroad, settlers and miners play in this strategy? How did they encounter and relate to the natives?

2. What were the reasons for American expansion at the turn of the century? What justification did Americans offer for the expansion? Describe the controversy surrounding the building of the Panama Canal. How were the obstacles in the canal controversy overcome? Was it just perfect timing led by an extraordinary man or the natural expansion of expansionist America?

3. Was Reconstruction a success of a failure? Or was it something in between? In your response you might consider land policy, key legislation during Presidential and Radical Reconstruction, southern politics, racial and political violence and northern ‘fatigue’ with Reconstruction. Be sure to make clear what you mean by success and failure. Chronicle the process that developed in the South of chipping away the freedoms granted to black Americans during Reconstruction. How the Civil War was remembered by white America. By 1900, what conditions did African­Americans in the South face? How did they respond to these conditions? Can you see repercussions from Reconstruction in American life today?

4. Describe how the industrial revolution created new forms of freedom for some workers while restricting some freedoms for others. How did industrialization affect all workers? How did the leaders of industry both promote progress and at the same time hinder it. Be careful not to generalize. How might issues in industrialization affect our area today ­ is there a historical connection to the industry in our area today?
