History

This week we are learning about the Civil Rights movement that fought against the Jim Crow laws. These were segregation laws applied

against Black people mainly in the southern U.S. from the late 19th century to the 1960’s. Before you do the reading, please look up

the following for a brief introduction on Jim Crow laws. Be prepared to discuss your responses to these in class:

I.) Read at least half of “Examples of Jim Crow Laws” found at http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/links/misclink/examples/homepage.htm so

that you have an idea of the breadth of laws involved. And listen to the very short audio clip of Charles Gratton found at

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/narrative_gratton.html

Please read the article “The American South: Campaign for Civil Rights” by Peter Ackerman from page 305 only to page 329. It can be

found as a PDF posted here on Moodle.
Please answer the following:
1.) What’s your gut reaction to the Jim Crow laws, audio clip and reading? (What did you find most interesting, surprising, disturbing,

inspiring?)
2.) What is the time period that the sit-ins are taking place? b. In what city and state are the sit-ins Ackerman focuses on taking

place? Find it on a map and describe the location of the city and the neighboring states.
3.)Give a description of the purpose behind non-violent action. Who inspired James Lawson’s vision to use non-violent action in the

U.S.? Describe some of the key elements in the training that he gave students that they had to adhere to.
4.) What was the purpose of choosing lunch counter sit-ins as the form of protest? What reactions did the the students get when they

conducted the sit-ins and how did this change over time?
5.) One of the purposes of non-violent strategy is to create a moral crisis so that the society has to acknowledge and make a decision

about the oppression that exists. Give at least 3 key strategies that the protestors used that worked in the students’ favor when they

were faced with violence. What were the key moments of confrontation and crisis that gave way to progress toward desegregation?
6.) Explain what conditions in Nashville made the desegration strategy successful that did not exist in other cities.
