Homeland Security

Homeland Security

Critically analyze and assess why Homeland Security is important, and what it means for homeland security considerations now and in the future for public policy makers and the society in general. You can do comparisons between policies, systems, agencies, and responses. Also you may compare past issues related to current situation and to the future, etc. The intention is to make sure you select and analyze a topic and causes you to think critically about homeland security issues.
o Evaluate the significance, potential impacts, and the ramifications of the issue at hand. Provide supporting examples that are concrete and sufficiently detailed.
o State your opinion- together with experts’ opinions, relate it to reference materials and provide reasons. You may solicit the opinions of experts in the field, but make sure to refer to written material (scholarly — peer-reviewed journals and books — see the link below) in order to support your thesis. Do not use non-authoritative sources such as Wikipedia.
? Conclusion: End the answer with a meaningful conclusion section. Do not repeat what you’ve already described in the main body of the paper.
o Make sure there is a nice conceptual and logical flow between your introduction, development and conclusion as well as across your paragraphs.
o Essay format requires that you do not present a collection of random thoughts. Analytic thinking and writing is essential. No matter how accurate or compelling they are on their own, if you do not knit your ideas together tightly through a coherent connective tissue, it will cost you points.
o Use paragraphs when you introduce and develop a new idea or concept. Also use short concise sentences instead of convoluted long sentences.
o Respond to all parts of the question before proceeding to the next question.
o Proofread and edit the replies for substance, clarity, completeness, organization, coherence, sentence structure, grammar and spelling. Your paper should be free of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
o Be sure that you provide sufficient in-text citations to sources and that the in-text citations and the ones listed in references are the same. Both should adhere to the required APA (6th ed.) format.

Question # 4: Critical Infrastructures
What makes a critical infrastructure ?critical?? Give examples of some infrastructures that are not critical. What are the differences between these and ?critical? infrastructures? Why are our critical infrastructures vulnerable? What should we do about these vulnerabilities?
Question # 5: Cyber Security
In a recent book (?Cyber War: The Next Threat to National Security and What To Do About It?, Ecco, 2010) Richard Clarke, the former National Security Council coordinator for counter-terrorism and cyber issues, and his co-author Robert Knake say that defensive and policy weaknesses make the U.S. highly vulnerable to attack on our critical infrastructures, especially the cyber infrastructure. They argue that one of our major weaknesses is that the government is focused on protecting its own systems, but no one is really in charge of protecting the nation?s overall critical infrastructures from a determined enemy attack. Assuming that they are right, what should we do about it? Should we create a strong government agency with power to order sweeping changes in cyber-security even if this adds costs and limits innovation by the private sector? Should we provide tax incentives for those who adopt government-approved measures? Should we rely on persuasion and private sector self-interest? Are there other options available and if so, what are they?
