Compare how Mirza Khan and Eid, described in Shadid’s Ch. 1, experience and represent contending visions within Islam on religion and society in terms of Eickelman’s problematisations. Look beyond Shadid’s framing of the problem as “identity.” Both Mirza Khan and Eid present Islam as “the answer” to problems of identity of Islam as religion/worldview and as Muslims persons in the contemporary world. The assignment is to take Eickelman’s article as a model or guide to reinterpreting the material Shadid presents on Mirza Khan and ‘Eid and that he frames in terms of identity. You are to reframe what he frames as ‘identity’ as explanation for different Islamic responses in terms of his analyses. Note that he is not making claims about Islam, as Shadid does, but presenting analytical models that may be applied to it.
