How Science Fiction has Influenced Reality

Writers Choice (See the document ‘Topic options’ below) Since your essay are due in about 3 weeks, here are a few helpful hints to maximise your mark. If you wish to receive some feed back on your drafts, send me an email after Tuesday. Remember you can keep updating your submissions on TurnItIn via blackboard up to the due date, however bear in mind that similarity reports may take 24 hours to generate. Some tips. * The point of the essay is to discuss a technology that has arisen from science fiction and is either here today (so write about what future it might have), or if it’s still conceptual, write about what real science had been conducted to further its development (and what is required to make it a reality in the future) * The essay is NOT about a detailed analysis of the tech within a sci-fi story or series. * It’s an essay, not a lab report or a book report for that matter. Use pictures only to draw a comparison or illustrate a future impression. * This essay is meant to convey how science fiction has influenced reality; you don’t have to write detailed reviews of the technology, a brief outline will do. I’m looking for inspiration and new physics (or at least breakthroughs). * Stick to the work limit. 1230: OK, 1250: OK, 1300: ‘Disaster for space station’. Your essay should be concise and not a comprehensive breakdown of the physics. Again, it’s about the science fiction. If you’re struggling with the word count, try to focus only on a particular aspect and only mention the others. Remember that the reference list at the end does NOT count towards the word count. * Justify the text instead of left alignment, this is not a letter. It’ll make it a lot easier to read. * You’re limited on word count, not page usage, so please don’t use small font sizes or narrow line spacing. * Use page numbers, I’ll be printing these for marking so don’t make me lose track. * Include your name and or student number in the header or footer of each page. * You get one mark for abiding each of the previous 3 points.
