How to write a response

A response to an argument may be developed in many ways: you might agree with the argument and extend it beyond what the author covers, you might disagree with the main
argument or assumptions upon which it is based, you might agree in part and disagree in part, or
you may reframe the topic altogether. No matter which approach you choose, you will need to
carefully consider the ideas developed by another writer and then respond to them in a thoughtful
manner.

Central to a response to an argument, is using someone else’s argument as a springboard for
developing your own. This means that your commentary will develop and support your own
argument even as you consider someone else’s ideas. This encourages the kind of critical
reading and critical thinking that you will be expected to do throughout college and that you
should do regarding arguments you hear in everyday life.
