•    Critically evaluate key concepts and models of HR strategy and the influence of the wider environmental context in policy formulation.

•    Explain and evaluate the inter-relationship between and integration of organisational and HR strategy.

•    Assess the relationship between organisational performance and HR practice and apply this analysis to identifying appropriate change management strategies within a case study

organisation.

•    Examine the requirements of being an effective HR professional and apply this knowledge to their own practice during individual and group assessments.

•    Create an individual continuing professional development (CPD) plan mapping skills, knowledge and experiences against the role and requirements of the HR professional areas.

Key Skills Developed:

Part one will enable you to develop your ability to critique practice, develop new ideas for implementation and present these via report format. It will enable you to explore original ideas for

your own personal development and present these in a personal development plan.

Part two will enable you to develop your ability to critique practice, develop new ideas for implementation, communicate these orally and present these via report format. It will enable you to

develop original ideas for communicating policy in an organisation.

This assignment has two sections, as outlined below. A further in class briefing will be held for students completing this work.

Part One

i. Critically review your personal, academic and professional objectives that were discussed in the first classes. How might these be improved and developed?

ii. Use these redeveloped objectives to redefine and restructure your action plan, with the previously identified weaknesses addressed and improved.

iii. Critically review your personal SWOT and HR Professions map. What key elements were missing and how could they be developed? Provide the redesigned elements as an appendix.

Part Two

i. Identify and critically examine Human Resource strategies that may be used to contribute to a workforce reduction plan. You should provide practical examples to support your answer and

refer to contemporary research relevant to the strategies that you explore.

Marking Criteria

Students will be awarded their grade based upon the academic standards outlined below:

Grade A  80+
•    As 70+ criteria but in addition answer demonstrates an excellent understanding of the assessment and the complexity of the issues involved in all sections of the assignment.
•    Evidence of creativity and wide reading beyond core subject matter.

Grade A  70-79
•    Comprehensive and accurate account of the issues relating to all sections of the assignment.
•    Very good critical exploration of the HR strategies, with reference to contemporary literature.
•    Very good critical assessment of appropriate organisational examples from different economic and environmental contexts.
•    Very good critical reflection on learning and personal practice.
•    Very good application of factual knowledge and application of theories/models to the practical situations of organisations.
•    Clear evidence of wide reading and well-referenced.
•    No significant omissions or errors.
•    Very well written and structured.

Grade B 60-69
•    Clear understanding of the question and includes the most pertinent issues relating to all sections of the assignment.
•    Good critical exploration of the HR strategies, with reference to contemporary literature.
•    Good critical assessment of appropriate organisational examples from different economic and environmental contexts.
•    Good critical reflection on learning.
•    Good application of factual knowledge and application of theories/models to the practical situations of organisations.
•    Evidence of extra reading beyond lecture material.
•    Few significant errors or omissions
•    Well written and structured.

Grade C 50-59
•    Answer demonstrates understanding of the basic issues with regard to
all or most of the sections of the assignment.
•    Reasonable attempt at exploration of the HR strategies, with reference to contemporary literature
•    Basic assessment of appropriate organisational examples from different economic and environmental contexts.
•    Some reflection on learning
•    Basic application of factual knowledge and application of theories/models to the practical situations of the example organisations.
•    Report aimed primarily at the level of available lecture and seminar material.
•    Some significant errors or omissions.
•    Material appropriate and logically structured.

Grade D/E 35-49
To obtain a D grade (i.e. a ‘pass’ mark 40-49):
•    (i) The answer will demonstrate an understanding of the basic issues and some evidence that appropriate material has been selected.*see note below
•    (ii) The answer may follow a logical structure with the overall framework sensible.*see note below

However, an answer afforded a D/E grade will also demonstrate to varying degrees:
•    Lack of evidence of extra reading
•    Lack of evidence of evaluation or analysis of the issues
•    Significant errors or omissions
•    Poor planning

*Note: If the answer does not meet criteria (i) and (ii) to an adequate standard the student will instead be awarded a higher E grade (i.e. 35-39)

Grade E/F 1-34
An answer afforded a lower E (30-34) or F grade will demonstrate to varying degrees:
•    Significant errors and omissions present throughout
•    Poorly structured and written
•    Little or no understanding of the question
•    Little or no relevance to the question
•    Inadequate material presented
