Identifying the Sociological Imagination
Background
The sociological imagination is the central framework that sociologists use in
order to analyze and understand the world that we live. As students engaging in
a semester long exploration of that world, it is essential that you understand
what the sociological imagination is and how it can be used. You want to think
about your sociological imagination like an under-developed muscle: it might be
unlikely that you can use it at this point in the semester, but you should be able
to identify what it looks like and when it is being used. By recognizing when
someone else is using their sociological imagination, you can practice using
yours!
Guiding Question (i.e. what you want to make sure you answer in your
paper):
“To what degree is the speaker utilizing their sociological imagination in this
speech or essay?”
Mission and Task
Your mission in this paper to craft an argument about to what degree is the
speaker utilizing their sociological imagination. After answering this question,
you want to develop your argument by providing an analysis about why you
chose to argue what you did.
Your task is to prove to me that you understand what the sociological
imagination is by evaluating an established speaker’s use of it- or not. Your
paper should include a definition of the sociological imagination that you use to
establish a set of criteria to measure the piece of text you chose.You also want to
illustrate your ability to develop a thoughtful claim about a subject and then
support that subject using analysis, quotes, a clear line of reasoning.
