interject personal bias

Research forms the basis for what is known about psychology. Most of the work is originally
described in journal articles. Our textbook usually offers only brief summaries ofresearch.
These summaries may not give you a good image of how the research was conducted. Another
problem in textbooks is that the author may interject personal bias in interpreting the research
results. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to contrast work reported in a journal
article with a textbook summary of the work.
In the book, find a study and its source referenced in the text. Locate the entire reference in the
References(pp. R-1 through R-87). I have put a copy of these pages in an EEE DropBox for
you. Make sure what is being referenced is a journal article and not a book, overview article,
review article, meta-analysis, or website reference. Find the article in the PsycINFO data base,
verify that it is from a peer-reviewed journal, and make an electronic copy of it. Write a two to
three page summary of the contents of the article. You may include graphs or figures on
additional pages and not count them as part of the three page limit. If the article presents a series
ofstudies, you only need to summarize one of them (but it must be the research that is mentioned
in the book). These summaries should be critical (i.e., note inappropriate experimental design,
missing data, etc.) and include whether the study is descriptive, correlational, or experimental
(see Myers, p. 33). At the end of the summary, compare the textbook representation of the work
with what was in the actual article. Include the page numbers of the textbook pages you are
using.
Summaries should be double spaced, with full bibliographic information appearing at the top of
the first page, single spaced. For one correct form of bibliographic reference, consult the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (available at the Reference Desk
in the library). You do not need to include a bibliography at the end of the assignment if you
only cite your article and the textbook. Adequate margins, one inch top, bottom, and each side,
are required. Do not right-justify yoursummary. Your name and student i.d. number should
appear in the upper right-hand corner of the top page of this assignment. For your own
protection, you should make a copy of this assignment before submitting it. A sample of parts of
the assignment is on the next page. Your assignment will be submitted both as a paper copy in
class and as an electronic copy to the DropBox, Intro A #3 Summary. A copy of the article from
PsycINFO database must be submitted to the DropBox named Intr A#3 PDF of Art. If your
article is not available online, scan in an electronic copy of it from the hard-bound journal put
that in the DropBox (a librarian can show you how to do this).
