Scott text book. It is highly encouraged that you do not use outside sources for your answers, but if you
must, please cite them.

The questions below are straight out of lectures. Therefore, I do not want to see unnecessary filler from
outside courses. To obtain full credit for each response, discuss cases and examples highlighted in class
sufficient enough for a complete answer.

Long Response Question – 50 points

1. Discuss the major human rights treaties (otherwise known as the Big Six) as noted in class. What
cases have helped shape these major conventions? How are human rights categorized and how
do countries differ based on these schools of thought? What problems does the international
community face in respect to human rights?

Short Response Questions – 25 points each

1. Discuss the laws of belligerent occupation. How have they changed over time? What major
conventions contributed to their development? (you should discuss the obligations of
belligerent occupiers, restrictions on belligerent occupiers, the responsibilities of the occupied,
and the time line during occupation)

2. Discuss and explain in detail the five “Ius in Bello” principles. Why are they important and how
have they contributed to the development of international law? What are some examples of
cases and concepts surrounding these principles?

3. Describe in detail the concepts discussed in class on the law of the seas. (This answer should
include but is not limited to: the categories of water and their importance, the proper use of
flags, shipwrecks, military and non-military vessels, regulating treasure, the consent to enter
territorial waters, etc.)
