International Relations

For this part of the assessment you are required to write a 3,000 word research methods report in a topic of your choosing. The report must be clear about the research problem, the type of research, the methods of data collection and analysis and ethical considerations. The report should be researched and written in two parts, part A on a qualitative method of researching the problem and part B, on a quantitative method of researching the problem. Please note that for part B (the quantitative method) you should clearly state whether or not you would use SPSS and why).

The report must be clear about the research problem, the type of research, the methods of data collection and analysis and ethical considerations. Mock Report
Introduction
This report will look at British public attitudes televised debates between party leaders. The qualitative aspect of the report will look at the impact of the debates in 2010 in terms of the public’s perceptions of the personalities of the leaders, whether or not the debates improved the public’s understanding of the policies of each party and whether or not the debates altered the public’s attitude to the parties/leaders involved. The quantitative part of the report will focus on measuring a. the number of people who watched the debates in 2010, comparing that number to the number who say they will watch this time and measuring the extent to which the debates impacted on voters’ decision making at the ballot box.

Part A – Qualitative Method
1. Research Problem –

1.1 Research aim Why is the researcher conducting this research?
The topic of this report will be public attitudes televised debates between party leaders in the 2010 televised leader debates. This was the first time that such debates took place ahead of a British general election and there were hopes that such debates could boost turnout at the election and general raise the level of public engagement with politics (The Newsonline March 2010). In addition to this, this is a significant area of study as the ensuing election resulted in a coalition government (Cowley 2010).

1.2 Research question (and sub questions):
• What is your hypothesis (loosely defined for qual)?
• What is your dependent variable?
• What is/are your independent variable(s)?

1.3. Discussion of relevance:
• Academic or Scientific
• Societal

2. Data Collection (part of the research design)Please note, for data collection and analysis in both sections you will need to explain your choice of methods
3. Data for this report will be collected by the following method(s)…. This is the best way to collect data for this project because…
Interviews (semi-structured or open)? Focus Groups? Ethnography? Participant observation? Discourse e.g. political speeches, policy documents, briefing papers, media reports?

3.1 The sample for this will be drawn from…
Sampling – Who? When? How? – identify your research population.

4. Once the data is collected I will analyse it using…. This is the best method of data analysis for this particular topic because

Data Analysis (also part of the research design)
Thematic – look for key themes (qualitative)
Hermeneutical Analysis – analyse findings within their (social/political) context (qualitative).
Discoure analyses (for texts – speeches, media etc).

Part B – Quantitative Method

1. The Research Problem
1.1 Research aim:
• Why is the researcher conducting this research? This could be the same as in part A.
1.2 Research question (and sub questions):
• What does the research want to know? Remember your hypothesis should be clear here, what is your dependent variable what is your independent variable? What causal connection are you looking for?
1.3 Discussion of relevance:
• Academic or Scientific
• Societal

2. Data Collection (part of the research design)
Data for this report will be collected by the following method(s)…. This is the best way to collect data for this project because…
Questionnaires. Interviews (semi-structured or structured)? Using existing databases.
Speeches, briefing papers or media?

2.1 The sample for this will be drawn from…
Sampling – Who? When? How? – identify your research population. Be specific for this section, what kind of sampling and how.

3. Once the data is collected I will analyse it using…. This is the best method of data analysis for this particular topic because

Data Analysis (also part of the research design)
• Statistical (quantitative – SPSS or not? Why?)
• Coding of data (what data will be coded?)
• Content (for speeches, briefing papers, media etc – you probably wouldn’t use SPSS for this but you would need something else –)
4. These are the ethical considerations I think may arise….
