In this assignment, you will analyze the various steps involved in the response to intervention (RTI) process and gain a better understanding of your state and local school district’s requirements and elements associated with RTI.
According to Section 300.307b of the IDEA, a state’s criteria must permit the use of RTI to address the needs of all students in the general education classroom. RTI may be required in addition to other assessments and strategies for determining learning disabilities. Individual states may make RTI mandatory, but the federal regulations do not.

Schedule an interview with the person responsible for the RTI process at your school. During this interview, you will inquire about the RTI process in terms of the following:

Describe what you learned from your interviewee about RTI in your school. Specifically, address the types of strategies recommended and the accommodations or modifications needed for the struggling student, the gifted student, and the English language learner.
NCLB requires that teachers should be “highly qualified.” Explain what you think this means for a student with special needs, a student who is culturally and linguistically diverse, and a student who is academically gifted.
