Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

In this week’s Learning Resources, Dr. Deborah Stipek, Dr. Pat Wolfe, and Dr. Carol Dweck compare extrinsic and intrinsic motivation strategies and examine their effects on student behavior, motivation, self-image, and achievement. Each supports the use of intrinsic motivation strategies rather than using extrinsic rewards, which they assert can have a negative impact on students. Consider the information in this week’s Learning Resources on extrinsic and intrinsic motivation strategies, and reflect on your own experiences with motivating and rewarding students in your classroom. What strategies have been successful? Which have not worked for you or have had negative effects? Has what you learned this week changed your mind about any of your methods? For example, do you agree that extrinsic rewards can have a negative impact?

With these thoughts in mind, consider the following:
? A practice that you currently use to motivate or reward students that is validated by what you learned this week

OR
?
? A practice you currently use that may not be the most effective strategy for motivating or rewarding students and what from this week’s Learning Resources made you rethink your approach

Post a response to one of the following Discussion prompts:

? Defend a practice that you currently use to motivate or reward students and validate your approach with what you learned this week.

OR
?

? Describe a practice you currently use that may not be the most effective strategy for motivating or rewarding students, and explain what you learned this week that made you rethink your approach.
