3.Experimental: Describe the procedure in a journal article format. Describe, briefly
(a) About the chemicals, standards and sample used in the experiment (5 points)
(b) GC analysis conditions, for example, what type of GC column was used, mention injector, detector, and column temperature, flow rate of carrier gas, and the injection mode (5 points).
(c)Mention all deviations from the suggested procedure, list problems which occurred (5 points).
4.Results and Discussion:
i)Include all chromatograms (5 points).
ii)Show all working equations and calculations based on sampling table and chromatograms required to construct calibration curves (5 points)
iii) Construct calibration curves for the standard ethanol peak area/height vs concentration of standard ethanol (%w/v), (5 points) and the peak area/height of standard ethanol/internal standard (tert-butanol) peak area/height ratio vs concentration of standard ethanol/concentration of tert-butanol (5 points).
iv)Determine linearity and scatter of the data, and explain the difference between the two Approaches (5 points).
v)Explain, which method is more precise and accurate to identify and quantify ethanol (5 points)
vi)Determine the detection limit for this technique (5 points). Use the baseline of the chromatogram as the estimate for the blank and noise.
vii)Show a typical chromatogram of the unknown sample. Identify all components based on their retention times (5 points).
viii)Discuss what properties of the molecules determine the order of elution in your experiment (5 points).
ix)Determine the concentration of ethanol in the unknown blood sample using calibration curves (5 points).
x)Calculate the average value and the standard deviation for the ethanol concentration in the sample (2.5 points).
xi)Calculate the confidence interval for the data that you have at 95% confidence level (use t-value given in the book Harris3) (2.5 points).
xii)What is the confidence level of the statement that the subject exceeded legal BAC? (2.5 points)
xiii)How many measurements do you need perform to have a 99.5% confidence level? (2.5 points)
4) Conclusions. Summarize what you did and what you discovered as well as the significance of your findings. This should not the same as the Abstract. Use journal articles as examples. (5 points)
