Category #4 – Why? This category is the culmination of all of your work. You are to consider the lasting historical significance of your
artist and their work. The significance of an artist is more than his/her celebrity status. You will use academic/scholarly sources found in
the library and/or the online database through the library website; based on the scholarship you read you will create this 2-3 page category
defining specific reasons why your chosen artist is significant. How does the artwork created by the artist influence that which follows? What
does the technique used by the artist add to the known techniques/materials used at that point in history? Why does the artist reference
certain symbols, colors, narratives, compositional techniques, building techniques? Etc. The main thing this category will cover is the
reasoning behind/why the artist is significant and influential. The information in this section is not “common knowledge” and you are required
to cite the specific works of scholarship. Ultimately what you are doing is identifying the thesis statement of your sources and acknowledging
what that scholar has added to our knowledge/understanding of the specific artist. Without a doubt this information is to be cited correctly.
