Listening Journal Topic: Nationalism

Music composed during the nineteenth century is often discussed as it relates to the
movement in music known as Nationalism. Scholars today debate the actual existence of said
movement and its influence on composers from this period. Using the nineteenth-century musical
examples found in your textbook as well as any others you find, write a statement that summarizes
your thoughts about Nationalism in music. Are there musical examples that highlight the
movement? Think of it in terms of “nature vs. nurture.” Do “nationalistic” characteristics happen
naturally in the music of some composers because of where they were born and the types of music
they were introduced to at a young age, or did composers purposefully try to make their music
“sound” like their nation by using indigenous qualities including instruments and folk songs?
Using your book, plus the Collin Library Online Databases such as JSTOR and Oxford Music
