Literature review on finding factors that affect the benefit of hearing aids

Blamey Saunders hears has a very large database of speech perception test results from adult hearing aid users in aided and unaided conditions. This project will involve the collection of new data and an analysis of the combined new and retrospective data to find factors that affect the benefit of hearing aids (ie the difference between speech perception test scores in the aided and unaided conditions). The factors to be investigated include age, degree and duration of hearing loss, audiometric thresholds, duration of hearing aid use, number of hearing aids worn, cause of hearing loss, a measure of “goodness of hearing aid fit”, unaided hearing performance, use of native language/second language etc. Similar analyses of cochlear implant benefit were conducted by Blamey et al in 2013 and Lazard et al 2012 and these will be compared with hearing aid benefit. The analysis will be used to produce a formula to predict the benefit of hearing aids on specific speech perception and questionnaire evaluations from other independent measures in the unaided condition, similar to the models developed by Blamey and Lazard for cochlear implant results.
