The Old Man and the Sea
Goal:
Choose 2 themes you find throughout the novel and explore them by applying the literary devices we have discussed
(imagery/tone/characterization) and identify how these literary devices are used throughout the novel. While reading The Old Man and
the Sea, review the handouts and notes from class. What themes emerge organically for you? How does the imagery/tone/characterization
of the novel lead to or support the themes you have chosen?
Structural Requirements:
• 2,000 word minimum
• 3-5 direct examples per theme from book
• This is NOT a thesis-driven or research-based paper. You are not required to use outside sources for this assignment.
• Format: Times New Roman, 12pt font, double spaced, 1” margins
This assignment is worth 250 points. The points will be divided up as follows:
Introduction 50 points
The introduction paragraph defines the 2 themes that you have chosen and previews their significance to the reading of the book. The
introduction also tells why you chose these 2 themes to explore.
Body of Paper 100 points
Body paragraphs must give 3-5 direct examples for each theme (6-10 examples total) from the book. Direct examples may include, but are
not limited to, quotes or descriptions of scenes. You will show how character, imagery, and tone are used and how they support your
themes.
Conclusion 50 points
Conclusion must revisit the main points from the body of the paper. This sums up the entire paper and leaves the reader with a
memorable impression. This is also where (if you so choose) you may vent about how you hated the novel or rave about how much you loved
it. Just do so in a professional tone.
Grammar, Sentence Structure, Word Count 50 points
Professional academic material requires little to no mistakes. Make sure you carefully proofread your paper (maybe even read it out
loud) to check whether your sentences make sense and that you have as few sentence-level grammatical errors as possible. Entire essay
meets minimum requirement of 2,000 words.
