Making Connections to our Lived Reality

Making Connections to our Lived Reality

The study of social inequality is broad and touches on many different, but interconnected aspects of our lives. Find an article in a prominent daily newspaper (Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post…) that fits into the study of social inequality. The focus of your paper will depend on the article you choose. The following questions may help in your search for the article / topic (do not limit yourself to these questions):

Think about the ways in which wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few.
What are the economic and social forces that lend to this concentration of wealth?
Is inequality likely to grow or diminish in the future?
What changes or trends support your contention?
How has globalization changed economies and impacted global inequalities?
How are the dimensions of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, ability intertwined in your own lived experience?
You need to extend your examination of the topic by finding some academic research in this area (3 additional academic sources: peer reviewed academic journals or studies in published books).

For example, if I am focusing on an article from the paper which looks at the rise of homelessness (an extreme articulation of poverty), then I will complement this by finding 3 academic studies which shed some light on the topic of homeless and poverty (what do social scientist have to say on this topic). You should use subheadings for your paper.

-Title page with suitable title and student name and date of submission.
-Your paper should be about 5-6 pages double spaced 12 font.
-You should include your newspaper article (photocopied and attached to the back).
-You do not have to include your secondary research articles
-Clearly developed themes which arise from the topic (subheadings help organize your paper)
-Connection to lecture and readings (if possible)
-Theoretical frameworks used in this area of study
-Your paper should have a good introduction (with a clear thesis)
-Good conclusion.
-Bibliography attached at the end (either APA or MLA).
