Lu Xun spoke of Mara poets as dissenting voices in society, and the need for the equivalent among Chinese writers. What writer do you think could be credited with stepping up to this position as outlined?
Using the stories in the course pack, pick one author and explain how they challenge the established
system and call for change. You will need to consider the historical context; what establishment is
the author challenging and why? How do they express their ideas in their stories/works? While your
literary analysis should be briefly related back to the relevant historical context, don’t forget that the
main support of your paper will come from your analysis of the story itself.
