Mark Sagoff’s “Do We Consume Too Much?”

Length: 5 pages, typed (double-spaced)
Your assignment is to trace and critically evaluate Mark Sagoff’s main argument in “Do We Consume Too Much?” (Schmidtz, pp.302-323). What main point does Sagoff try to establish? What reasons does he offer in support of it? Is his argument in support of this main point convincing? Why / why not?

Good essays will:
• show careful study of Sagoff’s text;
• be accurate, well organized, and clearly written;
• state accurately your Sagoff’s main point in the text;
• trace at least three of the strongest reasons your author adduces in support of this view;
• take a clear position as to whether your author’s argument is convincing;
• provide at least two carefully considered reasons in support of this position;
• support their claims about what your author thinks and how your author argues with parenthetical references to the pages where these ideas and arguments are found, e.g.: (p.307), (pp.316-17);
• contain few if any long quotations;
• bear an original and informative title; and
• be free of typos and grammatical errors.

Bibliography Requirement

Below the final paragraph of your essay, you should provide a bibliography listing every source you consulted in writing your essay, including sources that you do not quote. References

When quoting from a text or referring to some specific idea in it, please provide the relevant page number(s) in parentheses after the quotation or reference. Example:

According to Lawhead, Augustine believes that “reason cannot function properly apart from faith” (128). This belief seems to inform the way that Augustine approaches the “problem of evil” (105). He suggests that unless one believes that God “is not the cause of sins” (119), he will never come to understand the philosophical reasons why God cannot be their cause.
