For the IB math standard level course, one ‘math exploration’ is required. The ‘math exploration’ is a mathematical investigation in essay form. The
‘math exploration’ starts with brief history of pascals triangle, what it is, and an explanation of how it is derived. Explanation of some patterns
found in Pascals triangle. After that a real world situation must be considered, where pascals triangle can be applied. The application of pascals
triangle should consist of high level math. The bulk of the ‘math exploration’ should consist of explaining how to mathematically solve this real
world situation (using pascals triangle). It is important that all the working out is shown. Diagrams are also necessary and should be used a lot.
The ‘Math exploration’ should end with some reflection of how pascals triangle was applied. The reflection should:
-Discuss the implications of results
-Consider the significance of the exploration
-Look at possible limitations and/or extensions
-Make links to different fields and/or areas of mathematics
