Methodological challenges of management research (critiquing)

Maximum word count: 2,500 wordsMaximum word count: 2,500 words
Given business challenge: How to identify and leverage the experience and knowledge that already resides within the organisation to improve organisation effectiveness. In other words, how can we find the hidden capability in our organisation (Australian Red Cross Blood Service)?
Purpose of the assignment:This assignment is designed to get you to think more deeply about how you might solve the management challenge and why your chosen approach (done in PART 1) is/is not the “best way.” The main focus is on you discovering the latest management thinking to help you determine cutting edge solutions.

Requirements of the assignment:    • Re-state the problem in the context of your chosen management perspective as a research question.
o You may have to do some research on ‘how best to formulate a research question.’
Undertake a literature review of contemporary management literature that will help you to better understand the nature of the management challenge, how theory can inform a solution and what (if anything) has been tried before to solve this kind of problem (e.g. Has this challenge occurred before? Maybe in another industry? Has it been solved?)
Continue to conduct industry and company research involving critically analysing and synthesising business information. (CLO3)
o Your information should be both broad and deep. Once you have collected the information, you have to critically analyse it.

Identify and select appropriate tools, models and theories that will help you to understand the problem through the lens you have chosen.
o These should be from scholarly sources.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the tools, models and theories you’ve selected. Suggest alternative methods to eliminate weaknesses.
o Again, rely on scholarly sources.
Write a report justifying why your research approach to solving the management challenge should be adopted.
o Use a report format.
o Problem definition (15%) Breadth and depth of research (15%) Use of appropriate management theory (30%) Analysis (15%) Conclusions (15%) Report structure and academic standards (10%)
1) restate management challenge – frame a research question (to narrow down) 2)literature review – look for academic article (google scholar etc.) – read academic articles and evaluate/access whether there are any gaps in the research/theory. is it no longer relevant? is it not applicable that there are no gaps? 3)think about how to address gaps in theories used in part 1 if any (VUCA frame work to supplement existing theories) 4)look for articles on how other countries or industries have solved the management challenge (EU blood service or other industry such as fashion, supermarket etc.) e.g. don’t necessarily have to look for academic articles 5) Everything should be interconnected

Lecturer NotesResearch objective  To solve the inadequate of talent managementResearch question  How can ARCBS improve its talent management (knowledge collection and sharing), so that it can retain its labour supply and maximize human capital? Why retain labour supply?  e.g. In the event of declining birth rate (demand for manpower increases)How can the organisation address problem through?  Technology, collaboration etc.
Lecturer suggested report format1) Research question2) Why reason for research question is because I have this objective3) How arrive at this research question gap in theory/framework etc. that I used in PART 1 because these theories did not address ___, ___, ___ e.g. ESTEMPLE (improvised PESTLE), PORTER’S 5 FORCES (power of supplier, ethics, other stake holders). 4) Decide need to look at other concepts such as ___, ___, ___ to address new management challenge (research question e.g. how can the organisation increase expertise of talent pool, knowledge recording, leverage and share throughout the organisation)Include VUCA framework. And how VUCA framework affect PESTEL, P5, STRATEGIC CAPABILITY etc. V = environmental crisis can affect blood supply (nature disasters can happen without warning for unknown duration) NOT winter/tattoo because duration is clear. U = cause and effect is KNOWN but some details is UNCERTAIN e.g. theoretically we should get this result but due to not knowing certain percentage therefore unsure of result A = ambiguity. means it has never been done before e.g. theoretically research only, many possible outcomes including failure. New product/services) C = Complexity. How to make sense of huge amount of data. Too much personality and variable. Monitor to make sense of the changing demographics related motivations e.g. how to gain first time donor, repeat donor.

Possible research Topics (SUPPLY, DEMAND, INTERNAL (ARCBS))1) SUPPLY  IMPORT (Enough supply in source city), POTENTIAL DONORS (attract, recruit, retain  WHY HOW WHERE WHO), ACTUAL DONORS (CONVEY, RETENTION, WHO HOW?)Import  which country safer/enough supply to export/decreasing due to?  Aging population, more tattoo, seasonal diseases2) DEMAND  WHO? WHY?3)INTERNAL (ARCBS)  Already standardize for most things SOP in such industry and in ARCBS. Innovation. Knowledge sharing/knowledge management = for what purpose? How much cost can we really save?? What are those $$ saved used for? Compared to what we want to invest in, tech?ARCBS already increase investing recruit and retain donors  spend a lot of marketing but why is it still not working? Maybe target certain group work bit by bit instead of broad target? (target teenagers approaching age of donating thru field trip educational tour workshop briefing etc.) What is the real cost of problem faced by ARCBS? Certain segment of donor more willing to donate (those that lost loved ones? Educated woman? Young enthusiastic teens?) e.g. research question HOW CAN WE ENCOURAGE THIS SEGMENT OF DONORS TO DONATE/REPEAT DONATE
