ENGlOZ/Parlato – Short Paper #2 A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Although William Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, represents a shift into the new genre of
dramatic literature, it shares many of the same elements that make up fiction (story elements of plot and
character) and poetry (figurative language and imagery). Choose one of the long speeches in Act 1 or 2 and
focus on those elements that have a strong link to either fiction or poetry.

For example, you might discuss Lysander’s speech in Act 1 Scene 1 in terms of what it says about his
character, or how it drives the plot.

Lysander:

A good persuasion; therefore, hear me, Herrnia. You might consider elements of

There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee;

Steal forth thy father’s house tomorrow night;

And in the wood, a league without the town,

Where I did meet thee once with Helena,

To do observance to a mom of May,

There will I stay for thee. (l i 156-168)

Another choice would be to focus on a speech like the example from Helena in terms of poetic language.
Helena:

can you me fall”? that fair again unsaY- You might look for poetic devices such

Note the parenthetical citation for each speech. This is the format for citing a long speech from the play. A
short quote is embedded in your paragraph, and cited referencing Act, Scene, Line #5 as above. If the quote
is 2 or 3 lines from play, separate lines with /. Example: Helena states, “Call you me fair? that fair again
unsay./Demetrius loves your fair. 0 happy fair!” (181-182). This exclamation shows her distress.

You may use one of the speeches above or another of your choosing. In your paper, quote from the speech
(You don’t necessarily need to entire speech). This paper should be about 1-1/2 pages, typed & double-
spaced.
