Migration
Sugar in the Blood: A Family’s Story of Slavery and Empire by Andrea Stuart– reading assignment for HST 103, Fall 2015 [MWF sections].

Part 1—choose 1 (one) of the themes numbered 1 – 3 (excluding methodology and historiography-#4) found on the reading guide and write an essay using the information found in Stuart’s book (outside sources are prohibited). Part 1 (and assignment 1) deals with the information on pages xvii to 123 (assignment 2 will deal with the remainder of the book). Create a thesis statement that broadly addresses the chosen theme and that indicates what the essay will conclude. The essay must support the thesis statement with specific examples from the text pages listed above.
Papers should not exceed 4 typed pages (double spaced, Times-Roman 12 font with standard 1” margins). A title page or works cited page are not necessary because ALL information is to come from Andrea Stuart’s book. The heading of the first page should contain the title of the book.
Note: Quotations should be avoided; however, any words taken from the text MUST be highlighted with quote marks and page numbers. Students may also indicate that information was taken from a particular set of pages or sections in order to avoid charges of plagiarism. Only a page number is necessary; citing the author’s name and book title is NOT required.
Examples:
Migrants were “overwhelmingly young, male, and unmarried;” therefore, they did not represent their home populations (p. 16).
OR
Who migrated? According to Stuart, the vast majority were ordinary people, men of many common trades. They were joined by indentured servants and non-voluntary migrants, such as criminals and vagrants (p. 16).

These two examples indicate how to cite specific words taken from the text as well as the source of ideas that form a paragraph. Note the form of the examples: the () are inside the period that marks the end of the sentence.

Again, a strong thesis is required and it should be supported and proven by examples taken from pages 124 to the end of the book, p. 324. The same parameters apply; use proper citation, limit the work to 4 pages, etc.
The paper on part 2 is due on Nov. 4 by 8:00 a.m. Submission on isidore is essential—See the Assignments tab. The essay can be submitted any time (even several days) before 8:00 a.m. on the due date. Bring a hard copy of the essay to class.
