Module 2 Assignment: Ways of Knowing

In this assignment, consider each of Carper’s Ways of Knowing: empirical, personal,
ethical, and aesthetic. For EACH of these four ways of knowing, you will think about
and describe a clinical case situation with an intervention that was informed by th
particular “way of knowing.” Include an explanation on how that “way” of knowledge
helped to inform your decisions for the clinical intervention that you used in caring for a
patient, family, group, or community.
Thus, there will be four situations for which you briefly describe the clinical context, an
intervention used, and an explanation of how one of the ways of knowing informed the
decision to implement a particular intervention. You will complete this brief case
description, and explanation for EACH of the four (4) ways of knowing.
Learning Objectives Explore the development of nursing knowledge in the context of
nursing science.
Directions
1. For EACH way of knowing, describe a particular clinical intervention that you
employed for a patient, family, group or community. You will describe a total of four
interventions.
 For each way of knowing, briefly describe a clinical situation, and an intervention
used that was informed by the specific”way” of knowing.
Then, explain how the intervention, which you described for that way of
knowing, was informed by that particular “way” of nursing knowledge.
 Complete the description of the intervention, and the explanation of how the
“way” of knowing informed your intervention for EACH of the four “ways” of
knowing.

 Support your explanations with with credible evidence and arguments, using
information from reliable sources of information. Provide justification to support
your reasons that a particular intervention is an example of the selected way of
knowing.
 Include “in text” citations from at least one credible, peer-reviewed source to
support your arguments for EACH way of knowing. Use a different source for
each “way” of knowing. Use peer-reviewed sources other than those provided in
course readings.
 Provide full, reference citations for all of your cited sources, using correct APA
format. Include a reference list for at least four (4) different references from peerreviewed sources (i.e. include at least one referenced source for your
explanation about each of the four “ways” of knowing.).
2. You final submission should be written in a manner that adheres to scholarly
standards of written text. The submission should use double-spaced type with complete
sentences and correct grammar/spelling. Though a formal manuscript format is not
required, include a title page and a reference list for this assignment. You can include
headings, as needed and helpful, for organizing your paper.
This assignment is worth 10 points, or 10% of your final grade.
