Multiple-Source Synthesis Essay: A Walk in the Woods

In double-spaced text, please identify and elaborate on an aspect of the National Park Service described in the novel, A Walk in the Woods. You

are allowed to be supportive of the National Park Service, critical of the National Park Service, or a combination of the two perspectives. You

will synthesize author Bill Bryson’s ideas, ideas from two (2) selected readings, and your own ideas in this multiple source essay.

You essay should be five total paragraphs in length. You may select to organize your essay in the following pattern: introductory paragraph,

body paragraph focused on A Walk in the Woods, body paragraph exploring ideas from your two selected sources, body paragraph exploring your own

ideas, and a concluding paragraph.

Points to consider:

Your introductory paragraph must include an introduction of all three sources (source’s complete title, author’s complete name, one-sentence

summary of source, and location of the source), as well as a thesis statement (the last sentence in your introductory paragraph)
Direction quotations, summaries, and paraphrases must follow MLA in-text citation format (found in our notes and in A Writer’s Reference on

pgs.388-391).
Make certain that you are synthesizing ideas (i.e. noting the three perspectives of Bryson, your two selected sources, and yourself) to create

a cohesive essay. Do not simply summarize the three sources.
Use first and third person throughout your essay. Avoid second person (“you”).
Do not rely too heavily upon summary, paraphrase, and/or direct quotations. Your own ideas/words should take precedence. No more than four

direct quotations should be included in the entire essay.
Works Cited must follow MLA format (A Writer’s Reference, pgs. 398-399). I have included the citations of the articles (located in week
