Instructions and RUBRIC for READINGS:

For each reading assigned please submit an index card that contains the following:

1) On one side of the card write at least two quotes from the reading(s) that captured your attention and piqued your understanding of the subject. Please cite the page number and author.

For example:
“It is necessary to hammer home the idea that there is no such thing as a ‘primitive dance form. Those who teach ‘primitive dance’ are perpetuating a dangerous myth.”
“Even the word dance, itself is never adequately defined to apply cross-culturally through time and space. Kealiinohomaku, page 37 & 38.

2) On the other side of the card write a question or insight you gleaned from the reading that may have a connection to the quotes you chose:

• I remember when Dr. Nya interviewed for the position and she responded to a question about ‘world dance’ stating that that term was confusing and should be retired, since where weren’t we ever not in the world?

• Since reading this article and delving deeper in to the concept of what and how we as scholars and teachers define dance I retitled this course so that it was clearly not exclusive to other forms and styles of dance not done on concert stages in mostly western cultures.
