Topic: My assessment will provide insight Jennifer Ferreira
The result of my assessment will measure and provide insight into appropriate treatment methods for deficits in interpersonal skills and conversational weakness’. A sample size of 406
participants will be targeted during their initial evaluation. These children will be patients from a local children’s hospital. Purposive sampling will be used in which this population is specifically
chosen based on a referral from their primary physician for an evaluation (www.drtomoconnor.com). Data collection will begin with a case study. The diagnosis of Autism presents as a continuum
from severe too mild with changes over time. Therefore, the extremity of the disorder is often determined by co-occurring factors or experiences (Curran, 1982). Observation of the patients
both clinically and in a natural environment would follow the case study and occur prior to the completion of the assessment or rating scale. Information such as cultural variations and
carryover into all situations will need to be taken into consideration (Curran, 1982). After all data is collected, therapy will be designed to target deficits in conversational proficiency.
The advantages and disadvantage of these data collection methods are 1) purposive sampling may or may not be representative of the targeted population since all of the children will be
coming from the same town, therefore, will most likely be culturally alike. Likewise, by completing a case study the researcher will be able to look for co-occurring variables, however this
information may bias the researcher’s opinion of the patients conversation skills. Last, using a scale to measure conversation is created from the opinion of the child themselves and thus may
not be an appropriate representation of their skills since they may not understand the severity of their difficulties.
