Navigation Report

Navigation Report

Overview
You are a marine surveyor representing a company that has just taken over ownership and management of a new vessel, the MV ‘Calamitous’. You have been sent to the vessel as the master has reported the vessel as ‘not steering a proper course’.
On boarding the vessel the master ‘Captain Chaos’ informs you that ships gyroscopic (gyro) compass and magnetic compass are not aligned with each other (ie. not pointing in the same direction), and that he, along with his junior officers are at a loss to explain why this should be the case.
You must produce a 500 word fully illustrated report entitled:
“Finding Direction by Compass”
The report should describe and demonstrate the basic principles behind the operation of gyroscopic and magnetic compass’, on board a vessel; and justify why the magnetic and gyro compass would not necessarily always ‘point in the same direction’.
Detailed guidance
Include in your report the following elements:
1.    Principles of how they work, for a magnetic compass this will include a basic explanation of magnetic principles.
2.    Identify and explain the types of error that the compass is subject to, this should be illustrated with examples.
3.    Considerations to be taken into account by a watchkeeper using these items of equipment to safely navigate the vessel.
4.    Include in your report reference to any MCA ‘M notices’ relevant to the operation of these pieces of equipment (tip: visit http://mnoticefinder.com/ )
