Assignment Two (70% – 2100 words)

A range of theoretical perspectives have attempted to explain the development and application of different technologies and organizational practices (e.g. TD, Social Shaping, SCOT, ANT). Focus on a specific technology, innovation or organizational practice and critically examine how you would examine the development or application of this case from a TD perspective and either a SCOT or ANT perspective. This is a business school management major essay.

Marking Criteria
The following guidelines provide an indication of the type of competence expected for each level:
Third class work: a basic understanding of the concepts introduced in this course and a limited ability to apply these concepts to problems. Recognition of the basic literature.
Lower second class work: an understanding of the concepts, a greater level of competence in their application, and a wider knowledge of the relevant literature.
Upper second class work: the ability to apply and integrate concepts and ideas to the problems raised within the course and a more extensive and critical evaluation of the relevant literature.
First class work: the ability to evaluate concepts critically and apply concepts to the problems in imaginative and innovative ways. A wider literature search and the ability to synthesise and integrate the relevant literature in relation to the specific question.
While these criteria should provide you with some guidance concerning the demands and expectations of the course, they are not definitive and there are no rigid rules for evaluation.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course the student should have developed:
• An understanding of different approaches and perspectives to study of innovation, development and change within organizations and society.
• A knowledge and understanding of how these different approaches can be applied to specific cases and empirical situations.
• An ability to select and analyse research material from a wide range of sources and produce a report relating to a specific study of an innovation, technology, organizational practices or controversy.
• An ability to examine and critically reflect upon a range of theories, issues and perspectives and apply them to specific everyday settings.
