The purpose of this exerc
ise is to start to put into practice the elements of the module which
you have learnt thus far and to undertake a group project which mirrors a realistic industrial
business process. The assessment of the work will be a single group assignment and
appendic
es which demonstrate a structured approach to NPD and evidence of practical
activity. The work should encompass selecting, developing and implementing a NPD
strategy. The key stages within the work should comprise: (This list is not exhaustive).
1.
You are t
o formulate small team groups.
2.
Within your group develop a fictitious company, a background and its brand.
3.
Operating as a team within the company consider the design of a lawn mower
and break down its design attributes.
4.
Go away and collate market research
from diverse sources: websites, library,
catalogues, industry research, etc.
5.
List pertinent questions and review the design with target customers.
6.
Record these interactions using QFD (House of Quality and Matrix) principles.
7.
Demonstrate brainstorming, risk
analysis and product design review using a
selection of techniques, including affinity diagrams.
8.
Throughout the project select and demonstrate the use of a suitable product
development strategy.
Group composition will be decided and informed by the Modul
e Leader.
Initial project
approaches will be presented to the module group and this will be critiqued and peer
assessed.
This
presentation
peer assessment will comprise 25% of this assignment mark and the
full
submitted pro
ject assignment will be worth a
further 25
% of the total module mark.
With the two halves combined, this assignment will represent 50% of the final module mark,
with the further Individual Assignment representing the remainder.
