NRM

Part A

#1)- FOUNDER
If there is a founder of this NRM, identify him/her and write a one paragraph biography. Describe the system of authority. Is there a hierarchy? Who or what has the final authority?

Why was the movement founded (to remedy a problem, as the result of a vision, etc.)? What are the goals of this movement? Is there an end goal (e.g. salvation)? If so what is it?
(300 words)

#2)- MEMBERS
Why do people join? Is there an active program for reaching new recruits? Why do they stay (i.e., what needs does the NRM satisfy for its members?)? Why do they leave? Are there any consequences for leaving?

What is required of new members? Are there restrictions on the behaviours of members? Are there new behaviours that are adopted? How does affiliation affect members’ other social relations? How important is belief to new members (i.e., is there an orthodoxy that members must subscribe to?) Is the movement compatible with other religions? Does it accept other religions or does it claim exclusive access to the truth? (350 words)

#3)-IDEAS, SYMBOLS, AND RITUALS
You have been selected to introduce the basics of this New Religion to a group of people with limited patience and attention spans. You are allowed to discuss three specific ideas/symbols/rituals that you feel best express the core ideas of this new religion. Describe your choices and explain why you believe they are so important. (350 words)

#4)- CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES
There are lots of different controversial issues related to this NRM. Select one of those issues and take a position on it. Include in your answer your question and why you chose this particular question. Then argue your position. (200 words)

NOTE: DO NOT choose the same issue for questions #4 and #5.

#5)- RESEARCH: Ask a research question related to this New Religious Movement that interests you. Formulate a thesis. Then, spend sometime learning/beginning to learn the answer(s) to that question. (You might, for example, spend some time on the internet researching your question, or you might browse the online journals at the University of Regina Library.)

Basically, come up with a topic for a research paper, formulate a thesis, and do some research. However, you will NOT be writing the paper. Include in your answer what question you explored; your thesis, how you went about researching the question and what you learned. Your research question should not be solely description. (300 words)

NOTE: DO NOT choose the same issue for #4 and #5.

#6)- Depending on whom you talk to, practitioners or critics, Scientology is either pop psychoanalysis laced with fantasy and science fiction or a systematic science of personality reintegration and liberation that works. Which of these is more accurate? (200 words)
