Writing Assignment
Essays must be submitted on Moodle. Please do not email to your TA. You do not need to turn in a hard copy. For full credit all essays must be in a format that your TA can open such as doc, docx, pdf or xls files.
Instructions:
Choose one of the questions below and write a two page double spaced essay on your chosen topic (500-700 words).
Essay Questions:
Q .1) Michael Pollan is the author of The Omnivores Dilemma, In Defense of Food, and Food Rules- books written to help consumers understand the food industry and to make decisions about food choices. Below are four rules taken from his book, Food Rules. Choose one of Mr. Pollans food rules and discuss.
a) Its not a food if its called by the same name in every language (Think Big Mac, Cheetos, or Pringles).
b) Eat only foods that will eventually rot.
c) Dont eat anything your grandmother would not recognize as food.
Q.2) Describe a health problem related to nutrition that you or someone close to you has experienced. What was the impact of this illness on this persons life? Discuss evidence of the causes of this health problem and the dietary changes which have been shown to treat or improve the nutrition related health problem described in your essay.
Q.3) In an attempt to improve their nutritional health, many people turn to a particular dietary regimen. These include the Mediterranean diet, a vegetarian diet, the DASH diet, or low-carbohydrate diets (e.g. Paleo diet, Atkins diet, South Beach diet). Choose one of these diets: Mediterranean, Vegetarian, DASH or a low-carbohydrate diet and discuss the possible health benefits of your chosen dietary pattern. Please discuss any possible disadvantages to adopting this dietary pattern. .
Q.4) Obesity has been described as an epidemic in the US. Outline some of the causes of and solutions to this epidemic. Discuss at least 3 causes and 3 possible solutions.
Q.5) An opinion in a Center for Science in the Public Interest article states A penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugar-based beverages would raise $160 billion over ten years even as it would make a modest dent in consumption. Some policy makers are in support and at least 30 states currently have an excise or sales tax on sugar sweetened soda, the revenue being used to fund health care or preventive programs. Please discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this approach .
