PAPER TOPIC (Oakland Police Incident)

1. On Saturday, March 21, 2009, four Oakland police officers were killed by a convicted felon wanted on a no-bail warrant for a parole violation. The convicted felon shot and killed four Oakland police officers, two during a routine traffic stop and two when SWAT team officers attempted to apprehend him two hours later. The suspect staged an ambush of the police from his hiding place and was killed in a barrage of gunfire as officers returned fire in self-defense.

2. It is expected that the student select an issue of their choosing regarding the sociological, psychological, operational or administrative impact of the Oakland tragedy as it applies to American Policing. Or determine how law enforcement administrators or supervisors could have identified response deficiencies prior to the incident, what corrections could have been made or a plan of action the Agency could have endorsed to prevent this incident from happening.
