One child Policy

One child Policy

your required reading that are particularly relevant to population control in China are Chapter 1, pages 41-43 and Chapter 8, pages 334-337. Having read Chapter 1 and Chapter 8 and the textbook so far, you should be familiar with concepts such as the one-child policy, demographic transition, population control, population growth, and development.

A) Every student should find two very carefully chosen scholarly (peer reviewed) academic journal articles about China’s One Child Policy (the UW-M library has many scholarly (peer reviewed) journals available online and many in paper format on the library shelves such as Urban Geography, Urban Studies, etc—use only academic articles from scholarly (peer reviewed) journals such as these; you should not use non-peer reviewed articles and definitely not use non-academic articles from popular sources like magazines for this assignment (i.e., not Newsweek, Time, Economist, etc.)).

Using the UW-M library website, search for academic articles only in scholarly (peer reviewed) journals. To find academic journal articles in scholarly (peer reviewed journals), you can use a database/search engine like Academic Search Complete (EBSCO) (you will find it in “Databases A-Z” on the UW-M library online catalog). When you search Academic Search Complete (EBSCO) using a keyword, use the advanced search option so that you narrow your search to only scholarly (peer reviewed) journal articles (i.e., you need to limit your search to: “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals”). DO NOT PICK THE FIRST TWO ARTICLES YOU FIND—TAKE SOME TIME TO CAREFULLY SELECT TWO THAT GIVES YOU A GOOD IDEA OF THE ISSUES. If you need help searching for academic articles, please contact the UW-M library and ask for help in person or via the library website.

Based on your reading of the textbook so far and the carefully chosen academic articles on China’s one-child policy that you spent time carefully selecting, every student individually should make one single initial post of a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 350 words to the discussion forum topic on our course website no later than Thursday, 8:00 a.m. in answer to the following:

While it is true that China’s government is beginning to relax its population policies (Marston et al., 2014, p. 336), using evidence and/or examples from your textbook and your carefully chosen academic articles, and, if you wish, other academic sources (do not forget to correctly cite your sources throughout your post, including, of course, your textbook (e.g., Marston et al., 2014, p. X) and the academic articles you found and provide an alphabetized bibliography of any source(s) that you cited at the end of your posting (not included in the word limit), discuss two arguments in support of China’s one-child policy and two arguments against China’s one-child policy (do not base your initial post only or primarily on your textbook, also use the academic articles you carefully chose). Think about the benefits and drawbacks of China’s one-child policy, and then say and discuss which arguments you find more persuasive: the arguments in support of China’s one-child policy or the arguments against China’s one-child policy? Explain why. [5 POINTS] In a 300-350 word post, do NOT waste a few sentences or a paragraph (i.e. grade!!!) initially introducing the topic (because a general introduction will be worth 0 points and take away needed space for your post, which is worth points). Your classmates and the instructor have read the required readings already and know about the topic, so do not provide a general introduction and instead get straight to the specific requirements of the post.
