Purpose: Using your best writing skills, draft an essay in which you compare three of Shakespeare’s sonnets to three songs from the 20th and/or 21st century with the

goal of commenting on how the sonnets and songs depict similar themes and convey a timelessness of the human experience or emotion. For example, you could compare how

the theme of loneliness is manifested in three of Shakespeare’s sonnets and in three current country music songs and then provide commentary why this similarity is

significant. Do not quote an entire sonnet or an entire song in the body of your paper. Compare a few (2-3) lines from each text that you feel clearly touch upon a

theme, and then provide commentary. You are limited to one block quote in this essay. If you feel that more are needed, you must schedule a conference with me in a

timely manner to discuss this need.
Tone: Maintain an academic and professional tone. Though profanity and/or sexual content may be included in the lyrics, you should consider if those lyrics are a “good

fit.” That is, could you still prove your claim(s) with other lyrics?
Format/Length: 3.5+ pages (Works Cited and/or title page not included in page count); MLA formatting and documentation; 12 point Times New Roman font. *Papers not
